If you look at the story of Joseph in Genesis 39 – picking up where Joseph was finding great success in Potiphar’s house – there’s something striking about Joseph’s success. Even though he had lost everything – his clothes, his family, his resources, his freedom – because God was with him, the gifts and wisdom God had poured into him had remained.
The Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and how the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. Genesis 39: 2-3 NASB
Even later, after the false accusation of Potiphar’s wife, and the cruel punishment of imprisonment in the worst dungeon, Joseph again began to find success. God was with him and whenever God’s presence with him made him prosper, he gave God the praise.
Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is a divine spirit?” So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and according to your command all my people shall do homage; only in the throne I will be greater than you.” Genesis 41: 38-40 NASB
What Joseph endured was harrowing. I will never minimize that. Instead, I want to focus on what helped bring him through. There are two things I want to pull out:
- Intentionally being aware of God’s presence
- Giving God praise for the wisdom, skills and gifts he gives you
How can we utilize this scripture to help us today? There are two things we need to do:
- Be a friend of God
- Be a praiser of God
How do you be a friend? Well – how do you become friends with anyone? You spend time with that person! You become interested in her interests! To become a friend of God, spend time in the Word every day and time in prayer every day. Allow yourself to become aware that God is with you ALL THE TIME. You are never alone. Isn’t that amazing?
How do you become a praiser of God? Today, even if you can’t think of something good that happened, there are still things you can praise Him for. Find something to praise Him for. Praise Him that we have free access to Bibles to read and search the scriptures. Praise Him that He never leaves you alone. And as time goes on, begin to notice the ways God’s gifts to you have made room for you. For example, praise God that you are good at customer service and solving people’s problems. Praise God that you are good at organization and have all the laundry clean, folded and put away. Customer service and organization are skills that are useful and God-given.
There are so many examples – can you share one in the comments below?
