Let those who love Your salvation say continually,
“The Lord be magnified!”
Psalm 40:16 (NASB)
Have you ever felt like you didn’t quite know what to say in your prayers? Or have you felt you didn’t know how to describe what you were thinking or feeling or needing from the Lord? Have you ever thought to yourself, “I just don’t know where to start.”
We can find so much of what we need right in scripture. This verse in Psalm 40:16 gives us the perfect place to start our prayers – in praising the Lord. You can praise Him for who He is – our Savior, our Provider, our Healer. And you can praise Him for the things He has done.
Still not sure what to say? That’s ok too. This verse gives a suggestion. Just start by saying: “The Lord be magnified!” Another way to say it: “The Lord be glorified!” Another way to say it: “To God be the glory!”
The psalmist recommends just saying that one sentence over and over – he says to say it continually. In the process of praising God, so much becomes clear and you also open yourself up for the Holy Spirit to take over (Romans 8:26).
Everything doesn’t have to be complicated. Life can be hard. Relationships can be complex. Work can be wearying. After all of that its hard to know where to start. But prayer doesn’t have to be anything other than your open and sincere heart reaching out to our ever present and loving Lord.
Can you start with praise? Even if its just a few words over and over. See where it takes you! I’d love to hear your prayer and praise reports!
