Worship: “Hallowed Be Your Name”
I am busy. My life spends most of it’s time upside down rather than right side up. I am currently going through a lot of changes as well. Honestly, there are times when I don’t feel like sitting down and praying or reading my Bible. My alternative? Praying as I go through my busy day:
Throw clothes in the dryer – say a prayer.
Do this, do that…”Oh, I forgot, I was praying…” More prayer here, more prayer there. Pray, pray, pray, pray, pray.
“Wait, did I pray about this? I forget. Did I remember to turn on the washing machine? I forget. Time to make lunch.”
Do you see where I am going with this? My world is quite a whirlwind and so is my prayer life. I can’t even remember what I did 5 minutes ago. Sometimes I even ask: “Have I even prayed today?
My God deserves a lot more than that people. I can’t possibly give Him what He truly deserves (because, well, I simply don’t know what that would be) but I can sure tell you that He should be getting more than I am giving.
Does God mind? Probably not. He is going to be happy to hear from me whenever I come before Him. It doesn’t matter where, how, or why. But I know that I should be giving more. And I know that He desires more.
I am Martha, though I strive to be Mary. (Luke 10)
This is most of us. I know. But what are we doing about it? We are rushing through life and not focusing on Him-our sole reason for living!
I need to set aside time. I plan on doing this everyday, but I don’t always get it done. I say, “Life happened.”
God needs to happen! Let’s set ourselves apart from our busy day. Put our distractions to the side (blog, Facebook, cell phone, tv, chores). Sit at His feet. Give Him our undivided attention.
Won’t we get to know Him better? Won’t we learn what it truly means to worship the Lord?
How do we effectively begin worshiping the Lord? By recognizing who He is. “Hallowed be your name.” The worship grows out of our view of God’s identity…His name! He is God. That is His character, His nature. It encompasses all that He is. You don’t get bigger than God and God desires our closeness. He desires for us to worship Him. This is when we truly connect…worship begins with Him and brings us closer to the Him.
We recognize our relationship and the closeness we have with Him (Our Father in Heaven) and how majestic He is and worthy to be praised (Hallowed be your name). These are the first two items Jesus pointed out – they must be pretty important don’t you think?
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the Glory of God by reading Psalm 24:
The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness. The world and those who dwell therin. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters.
Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully….
…Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.” Selah
So I struggle with this. Setting aside time for Him. What is most frustrating about this is the fact that I know what works for me. A journal. I love to write (clearly) and it helps me to stay focused. Just as I didn’t get up to do a load of laundry while writing this, I am less likely to get up and start dinner while praying. I will likely start and finish the task at hand with my journal. It may not work for you, but it is very effective for me.
This weeks challenge: Focus on worshiping the Lord. What names do you like to use when referring to Him? Reading through the book of Psalm can really inspire some good worship as do old hymns! Focusing on Him and why He should be our focus. All He has done, is doing, and will do. What an amazing God! Try to start your prayer by recognizing your relationship with Him and worshiping Him for being Him. It just may change the tone of your whole day.
Next week: “Your kingdom come, your will be done” (Lordship)
Stay in the Word and pray to your Lord daily,
In Him, Nikki
