Holiday blogging can be so much fun! This is step 3 of our 5 Steps to Get Your Blog Ready for the Holidays series. If you want to catch up, check out step 1: Set Your Priorities and step 2: Plan Your Content.
Now that we have our content under wraps, let’s talk about the over all look of your blog and how to get it ready for the holidays.
Consider Your Reader’s State of Mind
During this time of year, readers are busy. They aren’t thinking about much else except how to prepare their families for the holidays. Whether that’s gift buying, looking for ideas on how to keep a Christ-centered Christmas, or dessert ideas to take to the next party, readers have a one track mind – busy, holiday frenzy.
Determine What Your Reader is Looking For
When readers come to your blog, you want to make what they are looking for easy to find! Therefore, think about your blog from your reader’s perspective. If they are visiting you, what sort of content are they looking for? This is when knowing your niche comes in handy. We talk about finding your niche at length in our eBook, Intentional Blogger: A Guide to Growing Your Blogging Ministry.
For example, if a reader is coming to our sister site, Intentional Homeschool, she might be looking for Christmas related preschool activities. We need to think about any Christmas activities we can make easily accessible. Or she might be looking for gift ideas for her toddler boy. How can we make our post from the archives front and center and easy to find?
For our sister site, Intentional By Grace, it’s a different story. This is a site all about living intentionally in each season of life. So if a reader is coming to this site, she might be looking for Advent ideas or encouragement to not let the busyness of the season keep her from focusing on Christ.
Do you see what we’re doing?
- We are brainstorming questions our readers might need answered.
- We think about the posts we have available in our archives.
- We begin to consider ways to bring this content to an easy to grab location.
If you followed yesterday’s step, Plan Your Content, then you’ve already created a sneeze page for your popular holiday posts. So now you want to get these posts where your reader can easily grab them.
Prep Your Blog for Holiday Visitors
During our series, 31 Days to a More Reader Friendly Blog, we talked about ways you can show off your popular posts. To prep your blog for holiday visitors, we would suggest applying these same tips with a special focus on highlighting your seasonal posts in your side bar. Be sure to create a compelling graphic that is festive and exciting to draw your readers’ eyes. You can read the entire post here.
Then if you’re feeling really froggy, you might consider “decorating” your site for the holidays. I think it’s neat when I go to a blog that is clearly decked out for the holidays. It’s the only time of year you can have snow falling on your screen and it might be considered okay. I still wouldn’t recommend music, but feel free to think about outside the box. How you can make your blog feel warm and cozy for a few weeks?
To be honest, we won’t be decorating. We’d have to decorate three sites (at a minimum) and that is just too much for us with new babies and toddlers. However, maybe someday, right? I personally think it would be fun! If you “decorate” your blog, please let me know. I would love to come live vicariously through you. 🙂
So tell me what ways are you preparing your blog (the overall look) for the holidays?
