When I visit a new blog for the first time, I like to find out more about why the blog exists as well as more about the person behind the scenes. This is when I seek out the about page of the blog.
Yet too often, I click on the about page only to learn twenty quirky things about the writer, but absolutely nothing about the mission of the blog.
In addition, it’s likely your about page is one of your most highly trafficked pages on your blog. This means you need to create a better about page for your blog in order to make your blog more reader friendly.
7 Tips to Create a Better About Page for Your Blog
Include your mission statement. You do have a mission statement for your blog, right? Your mission statement should be a succinct explanation of the purpose of your blog.
Tell how your blog will benefit the reader. Don’t make your readers wonder if your blog is for them. Tell them why your blog is important. What need are you meeting?
Include a picture. Don’t be shy. Add a picture that captures your personality. People love putting a face with the name. No one likes an elusive blogger.
Make your about page sticky. Take advantage of this highly trafficked page. Highlight other pages on your blog and list key posts your reader shouldn’t miss. Give them a taste of your writing by linking to other posts on your blog.
Include testimonials. I love reading what others have to say about a blog I’m visiting. Tell us what others are saying about you!
Tell me your personal story. Be sure to tell me about yourself, but keep it relevant to your site and the mission of your blog. Use this opportunity to capture who you are and how the reader can relate to you. This is a great place to tell us you have twenty cats hiding in the barn out back or that you have one foot that twitches while you sleep. But be sure to keep it short and sweet. Don’t bore your readers, but feel free to show your personality.
Include details on how to contact you. Readers love to connect. So be sure to include ways they can keep in touch. And don’t forget to give them an opportunity to subscribe your newsletter.
You want to keep your about page interesting and relevant to the mission of your blog while giving your readers a glimpse of who you are! Don’t neglect the about page of your blog. Add “create a better about page” to your list in Trello. Then get to work making your blog more reader friendly!
